El Dr. Gordon Neufeld, fundador del Instituto Neufeld en Ontario, Canada, es uno de los especialistas más renombrados en el tema de apego tanto en niños como en adolescentes. En esta entrada voy a resumir mis aprendizajes sobre el tema que presentó; espero que les guste tanto como a mí.
El enfoque de la charla del Dr. Neufeld fue en cómo lograr mantener el apego aun cuando existe separación (guardería, escuela, padres separados, etc). Para mí fue bastante revelador entender que cuando se logra el apego de manera exitosa trae varios beneficios para los niños:
- Incrementa nuestro alcance (hacia los hijos)
- Ayuda a sobrellevar “tormentas” emocionales
- Te ayuda a desarrollar tu propio carácter (y mantenerlo sano)
- Es vital en el desarrollo de una sexualidad sana más adelante en la vida
Como verán, no sólo estamos hablando de que un niño se siente bien y feliz en casa, sino que sea un individuo completo en sí mismo y con capacidad de relacionarse con los demás sanamente.
De acuerdo a lo que explicó el Dr. Neufeld, nosotros no nacemos con una capacidad de relacionarnos, ésta debe ser desarrollada. Tenemos como humanos una predisposición a ser entes sociales, pero si no se desarrolla la capacidad de relación, no se alcanzará la proximidad e intimidad que las buenas relaciones personales requieren.
La capacidad de relacionarse debe desarrollarse dentro de los primeros seis años de vida, aunque si por algún motivo no se logró el desarrollo, hay esperanza, ya que se puede trabajar en ello en cuanto se detecte la ausencia de apego. Esta capacidad de relación o apego es desarrollada gradualmente en seis fases secuenciales, cada fase subsiguiente agrega una forma más efectiva de mantenerse apegado cuando existe separación y permite estar cerca; a la vez que adiciona elementos de la auto identidad del individuo.
Tal vez la pregunta que ronda sus mentes en este momento es y ¿cómo se desarrolla este apego? Si todas las condiciones son ideales el apego lo desarrollará el niño por sí mismo, lo que deja de nuestro lado como papás el crear dichas condiciones ideales.
Vamos a revisar entonces por dónde empezar para crear estas condiciones:
Los niños desarrollan espontáneamente en el apego si las condiciones son propicias (ambiente cálido y seguro) y se les acerca con un corazón amoroso (donde las emociones gentiles se pueden sentir).
La idea de seguridad aquí se relaciona más con las interacciones día a día, que, con un hogar a prueba de niños. Para ejemplificar esta diferencia nos podemos imaginar un niño que se nos acerca a preguntarnos algo y es rechazado (porque estamos ocupados, con el celular, viendo la televisión, etc.) en este caso, en lugar de ser escuchado el niño siente rechazo. Una serie consecuente de rechazos similares provoca que el niño se sienta inseguro de acercarse a los suyos.
Lo que es indispensable es proveer ciertos sentidos de manera ininterrumpida, hasta que el niño sea capaz de mantenerlos por sí mismo. Por sentidos se entiende en general ¿cómo siente el niño su hogar? ¿es un lugar donde puede descansar tranquilo? ¿puede llegar a contar/curar sus heridas a su hogar? Para que el niño se sienta así debemos ayudarle a desarrollar los siguientes sentidos:
- Identidad (igualdad con los suyos)
Provee a los niños un sentido de grupo, donde se desarrollan valores familiares y culturales.
- Pertenencia y lealtad
Es el sentir de que eres parte de un grupo, una familia que te pertenece y a la cual tú perteneces también. Que sabes te protegerá y a la cuál tú también puedes proteger. Este sentido les ayuda a resistir la presión grupal, de grupos externos.
- Significancia
Desarrolla la capacidad de sentirse unidos, aun cuando existen diferencias o desacuerdos. Les ayuda a encontrar valor y significado en su vida desde temprana edad. Abre la puerta para nuevos apegos en su camino de desarrollo en la vida.
- Amor
Es la primera evidencia de que un niño ha desarrollado el apego, cuando entrega su corazón. Los ayuda a ser capaces de sentir emociones gentiles. Reduce el impacto de la separación (para ir a la guardería o a la escuela), ayuda a desarrollar relaciones sanas en su vida adulta y los ayuda a mantener un corazón suave en un mundo herido.
- Ser reconocido
Es ir más allá de sólo ver y escuchar al niño, sino comprenderlo. Es la seguridad de poder expresar lo que está dentro nuestro, en un ambiente seguro. Resuelve el conflicto de apegos superficiales (racismos, prejuicios, nacionalismo, nosotros vs. ellos, etc.).
El mensaje más fuerte del Dr. Neufeld es mantenernos como padres, el número uno en el corazón de nuestros hijos, para que desde ese apego se le proveen las herramientas necesarias para sobrevivir en el mundo moderno. No hay tal cosa que demasiado apego a la familia; si el apego se construye sobre estas bases se desarrollarán individuos capaces de tener conexiones sanas y sentir que pertenecen a un lugar único en este mundo: Su familia.
